About the UKO Karate School
UKO is a full time professional Karate School that has been helping students, and their families, to improve their lives with health, success, and wisdom through the practice of Karate for more than 25 years.
We have helped students and families from Port Orchard, Gig Harbor, Silverdale, and the greater Kitsap County area.
As a full time school with over 200 students, UKO is able to offer flexible schedules and additional learning opportunities. Classes are held 5 days per week with six or more classes offered per day at its fully owned 3400 sq ft facility.
UKO teaches a traditional Okinawan Karate named Shitoryu. This style of Karate is one of the four most popular styles in Japan. The other three are Goju Ryu, Wado Ryu, and Shotokan. All of these styles have broadly influenced each other.

The Head Instructor of UKO is Sensei David Grout.
Sensei Grout obtained a fourth degree black belt from Grand Master (Soke) Teruo Hyashi of the Hayashi Ha Shitoryu Organization in 1995 through his instructor, Master (Shihan) Akio Minakami. Sensei Grout has also studied other martial arts including Kendo, Aikido, Kobudo, Tai Chi, and Modern Arnis. He has also been a previous Chairman of the Regional AAU tournament. |

The Student Director of UKO is Sensei Janice Record. Sensei Record holds a Third Degree Black Belt from Hayashi-Ha Shito Ryu. She has also earned a Bachelors Degree in Human Services from the Western Washington University and has previously been the instructor for Karate and Self Defense at Olympic College. Sensei Record is a well recognized expert in women’s self defense and periodically conducts seminars on the topic. |

Sensei Roland Edgar is a Lead Instructor with UKO Karate. He holds a Third Degree Black Belt and has been a State AAU Karate Champion. He is currently the instructor for Karate, Self Defense, and Tai Chi at Olympic College in Bremerton. |
